WEEE Directive

The WEEE Directive, effective since July 1, 2007, mandates responsible handling of electronic and electrical waste by users and producers. European Parliament targets require Member States to recycle specific percentages of waste rather than landfilling. In the UK, Statutory Instrument 3289 enforces this legislation.

Distinctions exist between B2C and B2B routes. B2C businesses must join a “take back” scheme, while B2B entities, like IntuLux Lighting, can make their arrangements (3289, REGULATION 9). All businesses, including IntuLux Lighting, had to join a Compliance Scheme by March 15, 2007, to regulate manufacturers and ensure legislative compliance.

IntuLux Lighting opted for Wastecare, experienced in B2B waste management, and chose not to impose a “WEEE Levy” on luminaire purchases. Instead, customers have two options when disposing of luminaires in the future:

Appropriately dispose of waste, potentially recovering costs as commodity values increase.
Contact IntuLux Lighting to arrange collection, with a possible charge at that time.

IntuLux Lighting, prioritizing environmental commitment, is a market leader in extending luminaire lifespan and reducing energy consumption. They request customers to fill in a log when disposing of WEEE for record-keeping and government-required analysis.

Notably, IntuLux Lighting is not responsible for lamps, and customers should contact lamp manufacturers, like Recolight, for information on lamp waste when lamps become WEEE.
